Encouraging Diversity in Entomology

Hear the founding members of Entomologists of Color (EntoPOC) share their efforts towards diversifying the field of entomology through recruitment, retention, and activism/advocacy. The session will also highlight several EntoPOC-supported students sharing their research, and conclude with an audience Q&A.

Entomologists of Color (EntoPOC) was formed during the June 2020 #Strike4BlackLives and #ShutdownSTEM, and has a three-pronged mission: recruitment, retention, and activism/advocacy in the field of entomology. Come hear some of the founding members discuss the challenges that entomologists of color have faced, and how the group strives to close this gap by funding free memberships for BIPOC students to professional societies, retaining students through mentorship programs and skill building workshops, and conducting scientific studies to identify best practices for diversifying the field. The session will also highlight several EntoPOC-supported students sharing their research, and conclude with an audience Q&A.

Escuche a los miembros fundadores de Entomólogos de Color (EntoPOC) compartir sus esfuerzos para diversificar el campo de la entomología a través del reclutamiento, la retención y el activismo/promoción. La sesión también destacará a varios estudiantes apoyados por EntoPOC que comparten su investigación y concluirá con una sesión de preguntas y respuestas de la audiencia.

Entomólogos de Color (EntoPOC) se formó durante #Strike4BlackLives y #ShutdownSTEM de junio de 2020, y tiene una misión de tres frentes: reclutamiento, retención y activismo/promoción en el campo de la entomología. Ven a escuchar a algunos de los miembros fundadores discutir los desafíos a los que se han enfrentado los entomólogos de color y cómo el grupo se esfuerza por cerrar esta brecha financiando membresías gratuitas para estudiantes de BIPOC en sociedades profesionales, reteniendo a los estudiantes a través de programas de tutoría y talleres de desarrollo de habilidades, realizando actividades científicas y estudios para identificar las mejores prácticas para diversificar el campo.
